Billy Herman was an American second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the 1930s and 1940s. A 10-time All-Star, Herman finished his career with a .304 batting average and 2,345 hits despite serving in the Navy for two years during World War II. Herman retired in 1947 after playing just 15 games as Pittsburgh’s player-manager. He holds the single-season N.L. record for putouts by a second baseman (466 in 1933), one of seven times he led the league in putouts along with the three times he led the league in assists. He coached in the big leagues until 1964, when he began a three-year stint as the manager of the Red Sox. Herman was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975.
